Shawn,

Job sharing is OK. In some roles, it can work out very well. In others, well, not so well. In management, not well at all. Managerial duties should not be shared. It's the same as having two full-time people filling a managerial position. In fact, it's actually worse, because one person will not be around half the time to confirm a decision.

Nick,

Yeah, you're right about transitions. Especially when they're very clear about the goal so everyone knows what's going on. Of course, that creates a lame duck situation, which is another problem.

PETER

...And here's another thing, Bob. I have eight different
bosses right now.

BOB SLYDELL
I beg your pardon?

PETER
Eight bosses.

BOB SLYDELL
Eight?

PETER
Eight, bob. So that means when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my real motivation - is not to be hassled.

I can only think of one exception... We had a "President/CEO" who was fouling up the business and needed to be moved out of the way. We brought in a real CEO and there was a short transition period where we more or less had two CEOs to ease the ego bruising of the former as he was replaced by the latter. However (a) it was short and (b) senior management were under no illusions about the situation.

So in reality, I agree. It should never happen. But there are maybe one or two occasions where it might look that way for a short period of time...
