It's too difficult to come up with a single template. It depends on your market and business. A software company will have expenses greatly driven by headcount while a hardware company will have its expenses driven by manufacturing costs or inventory. A life sciences company will have testing and licensing costs and a consulting company might have travel costs.

Think about the basics and relate them to what you do. Salaries, rent, computers and such general drive initial cash output. What's the next stage and how will things change? How many people will you need and what help will you need from the outside. It's pretty straightforward, but it does involve a fair amount of guessing. Make the guesses. You'll improve the spreadsheet as you go along.

Good luck with it.

Excellent point, Bill. I like the multiple views of accomplishment: "show the teams, the markets and/or the technology's real capabilities."

Good advice. The key is identifying some real and important accomplishment milestones that can be executed and that show the teams, the markets and/or the technology's real capabilities, they step up the valuation and raise more to get to market.

Thanks Alex, very kind of you. I've thought about it before and have had several proposals from people to collaborate on such a book (real or virtual). I've never had the time to focus on such a thing, though. One day I hope to reorganize this blog to be a better "Bible" and resource to entrepreneurs, though.
