Freedom (TM) is a sequel to Suarez’ first book, daemon, which was excellent. If you haven’t read the first book, I highly advise that you go there before reading this one. While the author attempts to fill in the holes, it’s a complex story – you’ll need the first book as a primer. Bottom line: it’s a techno-thriller with some mayhem and loads of action. If you’re not into killer machines and virtual realities, this isn’t a book you want to be spending your time on.
The beginning of this book is sorta preachy. It feels like Suarez is laying out his Utopian socio-political world with bad big government, evil corporations and wealthy assholes looking to subjugate the underclass. As the story moves on, though, everything starts fitting together and everything begins to feel right. While some of the story teeters on crossong the line of being completely unbelievable, most of it holds together well
The book is fast moving and fun. There are some tangibly scary parts concerning hyper-inflation and unemployment that are reasonable enough to make the reader think, but in the end, it’s all about a good sci-fi-ish story where the good guys aren’t always so good and the bad guys not always so bad.
