I haven’t read a Grisham book in a long time having gotten tired of the standard legal/courtroom/trial drama that he writes about. I picked up this book to see if I missed anything in the 6,000 books Grisham has written since I stopped trying to keep up with his output.

For the most part, I wasn’t disappointed. The story was fast and fun and really didn’t have much courtroom activity. It was about a lawyer, though – not much of a surprise. The story is a bit unusual. Things go way too well throughout the book making the reader get suspicious and anxious about what’s going to happen – the story just has to turn sometime. It does, but it does pretty late. Very late.

I was a bit disappointed that in trying to make it harder to guess what’s going to happen in the story, the author cheats. That’s right. He cheats. Yes, there is a surprise, but it’s a surprise because the story doesn’t follow a path that would have happened in real life. Not even close. The reader doesn’t think it’s possible, because logically, it doesn’t make practical sense that what happens, happens. Sorta pisses me off.

Still, the story is enjoyable and a really quick read. Fun filler. Good for the beach or an airplane.
