Echo Park (Harry Bosch)

By Michael Connelly

Echo Park (Harry Bosch)

You can view this book's Amazon detail page here.

I’m not really a lover of detective stories, but something always draws me back to Michael Connelly books. It’s probably because I really liked his books, The Lincoln Lawyer and and The Brass Verdict. Those books were legal thrillers, which I like better than detective stories, but are written in Connelly’s excellent style.

This book starts out slowly. It is part of a long series of books about a detective, Harry Bosch, and Connelly has to bring newbie readers up to speed. Like many serial novels, the story itself is not as interesting as the telling of it and Connelly does a good overall job. The second half of the book picks up and I found myself moving through it much faster. It’s difficult to pick out the major bad guy (the minor ones are obvious), and Connelly sorta cheats by reflecting on actions the reader wasn’t exposed to at the end of the book to make the bad guy look more obvious. Personally, I’d rather find myself realizing that I should have figured out the bad guy myself earlier, having been exposed to all the info right up front.

The story is fun and it’s perfect for light reading on the beach. Another in a series of good, entertaining books. That about sums it up.
