Simply fantastic. One of the most enjoyable works of fiction that I have ever read. Scott Turow’s latest book, “Innocent” was recommended to me recently. As a sequel to his bestselling “Presumed Innocent” from 1987, I thought that I should read the original first – unlike the rest of the population of the US, I had not read it when it was a huge hit when released.

Presumed Innocent is a murder mystery told in the first person (the way I like ‘em). Usually, I find that the perpetrator of the crime is fairly obvious early in the book; at least in the first half. The rest of the book is an exercise in working out the details. While I considered the guilty party earlier in the story, it wasn’t clear and there were loads of suspects to the end of the book. Perfect.

The characters, especially the hero, were very well described with totally believable personalities assigned to them. The reader understands not only what is going on and, for the most part, the motivations for all actions.

I couldn’t put it down. I found myself going back to the story as often as possible and completed the book in a marathon session in which I couldn’t stop myself. Highly recommended.
