This is a really terrific book. A murder mystery with a cop drama flair, but wonderfully written. The story is rich, deep and emotional. Not your run-of-the-mill serial murder story. The characters are great and always interesting and the pace of the story is steady and moderately fast – it never bogged down.
At times, the story got so emotional, in fact, I wanted to skip ahead. I just couldn’t read fast enough to deal with my need to know what was going to happen next. Some of this might be because the writer, Tana French, is Irish and the story is based in Dublin. My mother was Irish – off the boat just months before I was born in the US. French’s use of Irish slang, colloquialisms, and profanity all brought back memories of my mother from when I was a child. “Jaysus, Mary and Joseph!”
I was slightly disappointed with how French handled the ending of the book. I like all lose ends tidied up nicely. This is a very minor complaint about a thoroughly enjoyable book, though. Highly recommended.
